With reference to my dospatch No.26 of
the 17th January last respecting the illicit coin-
age of silver in certain parts of China, I have
the honour to enclose herewith to Your Lordship
translation of a despatch which I have received from
the Taungli Yemen, and a copy of my reply to them
upon this subject.
The Yamên have sent a similer communica-
tion to the United States, Japanese, and Netherlands
Representatives, and I have been in consultation
with them with regard thereto.
Baron Hayashi visited me this morning to
enquire as to the bearing of English Law upon the
questions in point.
I informed him thereupon to the extent of
